Australia’s Trade Minster to discuss trade deal with UAE

11/05/2004 -

Trade Minister Mark Vaile will discuss a possible trade deal with the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday before heading to Washington to sign an agreement with the United States.

Vaile will visit the UAE, France and Belgium for high level trade talks before the official signing of the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with US trade representative Bob Zoellick on May 18.

He will meet senior UAE figures to discuss a possible trade deal and other issues, including progress in aviation relations and opportunities for Australian schools and universities.

In Brussels, he will meet Dr Franz Fischler, the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Developments and Fisheries before heading to Paris for the two-day OECD ministerial council meeting on May 13 and 14.

He visits Washington from May 17 to 19 to sign the FTA and lobby senior congressional and business figures to encourage support for the FTA's passage through the US Congress.

"The government hopes to see the agreement enter into force on January 1, 2005," Vaile said in a statement.
